What our customers say about their holidays

IMPORTANT RE LIFT AND SHOWER ACCESS: To the owner and Sykes: GIVE PEOPLE THE LIFT INFORMATION IN ADVANCE!

See other reviews below. I got an email from Sykes pre-arrival with all necessary information re keys and entry etc EXCEPT about the lift. It promised a text from the owner on the day of arrival. I didn’t get one. Sykes had sent another email to me with the lift info, which I did not receive because I do not use email on my phone, and only saw when I got home. You get a key to a door on the left of the building where there is no lift. There is another door for other apartments to the right side of the building, which the outer door-key ALSO fits, which is not obvious at all. The lift is there! So I struggled (I’m partially disabled) up three flights of stairs with baggage, thinking that there was no lift. Thankfully my friend realised a 3rd floor door led across the outside of the building and we realised the lift was there and then tried the key in the other ground-floor door. See the reviews below: Mar 2023, Jun 2023, July 2021, and Jan 2022 (when they never found the lift). This is ludicrous. There is no sensible reason for omitting the lift access information from that sent in advance. And clearly Sykes and the owner do not read the reviews or have not acted on the feedback. Sykes: THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT FOR DISABLED PEOPLE, and annoying for everyone. There is so little accessible accommodation in Whitby and many disabled people will opt to stay at this apartment. RE THE SHOWER: The photo of a walk-in shower makes it look fairly accessible, but the shower tray and screen are too long for the size of the room. There is only an 18-inch gap between the end of the fixed screen and the wall. My shoulders are wider than that and I therefore had to walk in sideways facing the wall and then step backwards over the shower tray. This would prevent people with greater disability from safely accessing the shower – and there is no grab rail. (Mentioned in Oct 2021). To Sykes and the owner – grab rails are not expensive additions, and when this shower needs replacing, a shorter screen would be sensible. And I previously booked a Whitby property with an accessibility statement with all measurements, which may help. There are people I know who would not have been able to use that shower. These simple things will get you more repeat bookings, but a little thought and extra information is crucial to avoiding anxiety and at worst an inaccessible apartment for disabled people. Contrary to a previous review the flat itself was very clean, but I always check the beds and the mattress protectors needed a shake (!) and did not look as though they had been washed. These should be washed between every visit. A minor niggle was that the toilet roll holder had a bit of old cheap spring at one end so it was unusable. I don’t understand how these cheap and broken things are not fixed. I am sad to write the above because the apartment is lovely, was very well-equipped, and apart from the above points, a Godsend for disabled or elderly or ill people. It is an almost flat 10-minute walk to the town and swing bridge and has parking right next to the building. The views over the river and to the harbour are fabulous, and to sit and watch gulls, cormorants, ducks and shags right outside, and steam trains, and the lights of the town at night was wonderful. So please, Sykes, and Kerrie, get the above sorted. It may help future bookings (and more importantly avoid even more repetitions of the problem) if you respond to this review to say that the above issues have been sorted. Not everyone reads or scrolls down these reviews.

The cottage itself is beautiful and very nicely located. It is about half an hour walk to Whitby (choosing the flatter walk alongside the train track) or longer if you tackle the hills over Ruswerp fields. There is a local pub and butchers that sell high quality food along the high street and we were very impressed with the services. We were disappointed that there was an electrical fault whilst we were staying in the property that left us without access to the washing machine, dishwasher and half the plugs in the kitchen. We rang the numbers in the brochure but it took two days for someone to come out and sort things. In the meantime, it left us apprehensive about using appliances in case of further power cuts or worse. The brochure in the cottage does have useful information in. However, the farmers market advertised is for Whitby in Canada! It’s a good job we used google. Whilst the property states is it pet friendly and is, the property also states it has an enclosed garden. The garden is not enclosed and a dog could easily get out and onto a main (very busy) road. With all this is mind, we would still stay at the property again and would recommend it to others. I would advise anyone with dogs to take them out on a lead at all times and do your own research about the local area (the pub has lots of brochures)

To start with the positives, the property is located in a great place for getting into Whitby.

You walk down the bank for 10-15 mins and you are right in the centre. You do need to be fit though because the bank is extremely steep to come back home. Its a good location for going further afield (I would highly recommend Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay). Unfortunately, there were alot of negatives with this property. It wasn't clean enough to the standard I was expecting, for example every single room had cobwebs in the corner of the room, the kettle had heavy scale, the iron had scale which transferred to your clothes when you used it (and leaked everywhere!). There were 3 trays provided for the oven and only the smallest one actually fit in. The shower in the bathroom was terrible, water leaked out of the bottom of the shower and hardly any came out of the head. There was a chunk out of the bath and the living room radiator. The house must be suffering from issues with damp as the entrance hall and living room walls were visible wet at the bottom. The neighbours were extremely loud, shouting and screaming at each other on a morning. I wouldn't recommend this property to others and wouldn't stay again, it's a real shame as it has potential to be so much better.

Lovely house very clean and tidy.

In a residential area just outside Whitby centre. A not to far walk from the centre one way on the cinder way then we went to Ruswarp the other way. But be aware the steep uneaven steps make it hard going. But we are over 70. Couple of draw backs, the dishwasher top drawer was broken so we didn’t use it, then later found it also had a leak, the toilet seats were very unstable. The beds all could do with new mattresses. The big minus though was being mid terrace we had three screaming kids on one side and a boy kicking a football for hours against the walls on the other. We could have complained but didn’t want to upset the locals, but could put us off going there again. A suggestion to the owner if a cupboard was installed in the alcove to the right of the chimney breast, glasses could be put there, then the other cupboard could be used to put food in,

I would highly recommend the Tannery.

It is the perfect base to explore Whitby and North Yorkshire. It was only about a 15 minute walk to Whitby harbour which was brilliant when you have children with you! The house itself was immaculate and very clean. All beds were extremely comfortable for a good nights sleep. The house had everything you would need in terms of cooking and cleaning, the lovely owners also left a very nice welcome hamper and some dog treats which was a lovely surprise! There is also a lovely big dining table for family meals. Although there are neighbours either side with it being a terrace we never heard them and wouldn't have even known they were there. It really was a fantastic place to stay and a very lovely break after all of the lockdowns, we will definitely be back! Thank you for having us!
