What our customers say about their holidays

    • Andrew - Verified booking

Firstly the location was absolutely phenomenal - being only a few minutes from nearly all of the main tourist spots of the Lakes.

The hotel itself is set right on the banks of the reservoir, overlooked by Helvellyn. For walkers, or those wanting to be close to everything, and out all day, this is a perfect spot. At the time of writing, the only constructive criticism i have is the Hayloft is a little tired and does need a freshen up. The bathroom has a bit of black mold on the ceiling, tiles, and shower curtain. The floor and sofas could use a proper clean, and there are water marks under the windows. Furthermore wi-fi is very poor in the room itself. As a note to the owner, this can be easily rectified by using boosters or discs. The owners are friendly and very helpful, and we felt very welcome the entire time of our stay. Overall, i would recommend this location if you plan on long days out exploring the Lakes. However, if you're looking for a place to spend time relaxing at the hotel, I would consider looking elsewhere. For my wife and I that were out exploring from 9am to 8pm everyday, this was a good place - although maybe a little on the expensive side.

The cottage was generally clean and tidy although as I was cleaning up before our departure I found food debris under the sofa that was not dropped by us (as we had not eaten pringles!

) There is a common complaint that the oven was missing the temperature numbers but it is good to be able to say that this has been rectified with a new oven. Unfortunately, the other common complaint of not enough toilet rolls has not been addressed and it would be an easy fix to supply a second toilet roll. The double mattress is getting quite 'tired' and was fairly uncomfortable and as such I didn't sleep very well. The two sofas are also quite small and uncomfortable as well as also being well worn. But the location is very good indeed, the chippy over the road is excellent and there are good pubs not very far away. I looked on Google Earth and noticed that there was an open recreation park close by so I thought that would be a great place to 'play ball' with our labrador but unfortunately there are signs up that say that dogs must be kept on a lead so our dog walks ended up along public footpaths which were still enjoyable but didn't involve too much running after a ball. All in all a reasonable cottage in a lovely little village.

Acorn cottage was really lovely and a great location.

The property itself was very clean on our arrival and we done a pre order of a breakfast pack which was in the fridge ready for our first morning. I would recommend this as after a 4 hr journey it was nice to just get there and start enjoying our holiday without having to go shops straight away. It also had tea, coffee, fresh milk and biscuits for when we got there. The hot tub was lovely and clean and had such a lovely veiw which me and my husband enjoyed every day of been there and having sheep as our neighbours was great. We also enjoyed the lovely log fire esp as we went in the winter. The only thing I think the property could do with is some hooks around the place to hang things like coats or dressing gowns and a shoe rack would have been very handy. Just another thing to keep in mind there is no doors in the property separating any of the rooms including bathroom, luckily for us me and my husband don't mind but some couple's might not like that there isn't much privacy in the bathroom. I would certainly book to go again.

The Hayloft is an upstairs conversion and has only one opening window no more than 30cm square.

The heat would have been intolerable, but fortunately the unit below (The Stables) was available and the owners allowed us to have that instead without any fuss. I think the fact that the Hayloft is an upstairs unit with poor ventilation should be made clear in the details. In The Stables, bathroom lighting was inadequate for shaving/make up. I guess the illuminated mirror was meant to make up the light level, but was not working. The self catering facilities were adequate but we had hoped that, as part of the Dale Head Hall Hotel complex, we might have been able to get a meal in their restaurant if we fancied a change. That was not possible as the hotel does not do evening meals except for pre-booked 'fine dining' at £40 a head. While we were there we were not aware of any guests availing themselves of this facility. As the hotel describes itself as a hotel and restaurant, it would be helpful if the details for the self catering units gave some indication of the restricted availability of the restaurant.

For the price I really can’t complain.

Great location. I was blessed with beautiful weather so could sit out round the front of the hall over looking the lake. Nice little walk down to the actual lake. It’s such a peaceful place. The apartment is dated except the nice modern bathroom but if it wasn’t dated I’m sure it would cost a lot more! The only thing I would say is it could have been cleaner. There are no windows in the bedroom so it was very warm and stuffy and has an old smell. I think some air fresheners would be a good idea! Because of midgies being by the lake can’t have the little window in living room/kitchen open. Might as well have no wifi which probably isn’t a bad thing if you’re looking to escape and relax. But don’t visit wanting to be able to use the Internet. There is a pub a 5 minute walk if that (end of the property drive) which is lovely. And a regular bus service which I used several times only £2 a journey can get to Keswick Ambleside and beyond!
