This beautiful county is perfect for adventure seekers, with a wide range of outdoor activities on offer, including hiking, cycling, and water sports. If you fancy taking it easy on your break, then you'll find plenty of idyllic villages and bustling market towns such as Thirsk. Or, why not visit the iconic city of York and discover the incredible castle, pretty streets lined with shops and restaurants, and the impressive Jorvik Centre?

However you want to spend your time, our North Yorkshire holiday cottages provide the ideal base. Choose cottages tucked away in scenic countryside, ancient stone houses overlooking the sea, or sweet traditional homes nestled in sleepy villages.

Why choose a North Yorkshire weekend break or staycation?

North Yorkshire rivals anywhere else in the UK for its charm and natural beauty. With dramatic landscapes, famous historical landmarks, coastal towns, and spectacular countryside, this county has something for everyone.

The North York Moors is a registered National Park and makes for an amazing day trip. The wild beauty is made even more remarkable with miles of wild heather and a rugged coastline, perfect for memorable walks and enchanting views.

This stunning region is also home to some truly picture-perfect towns and villages each with its own charm and character. You'll fall in love with the village of Staithes, which is built right in the gap between two rugged cliffs and has the loveliest high street filled with boutiques and cafes. Knaresborough is a larger market town built along the River Nidd and boasts numerous historic landmarks, such as the remains of Knaresborough Castle.

The popular and historic seaside resort of Whitby falls within North Yorkshire and is well worth a visit, not least to stand in awe of the spectacular ruins of Whitby Abbey and enjoy a relaxing day on the coast. This is the town that inspired Bram Stoker to create his famous vampire novel, so watch out for vampires, as this is where Count Dracula landed!

While staying in North Yorkshire, a trip to the city of York is a must. Have an adventure as you march along the medieval walls of the city, discover the history of the Vikings in the Jorvik Viking Centre, explore what life used to be like in the region at the York Castle Museum, and enjoy a well-earned cuppa and a scone at the famous Betty's Tearoom.

What our customers say about their holidays

    • James - Verified booking

Garthgate Lodge is an exceptional place to stay.

Sarah, the owner, has thought of everything. As an example, Sarah caters for your dog better than a number of places cater for the fee paying humans. There's dog treats, poo bags, dog bed, bowls, etc. As for the Lodge itself, it is equipped to a very high standard, I would say better than most peoples homes. The layout is perfect, the rooms are a great size, the walk-in shower is brilliant and big enough for two (only for water saving reasons of course :) ). The hot tub is a god send and being undercover, means regardless of the weather, it can be enjoyed all year round. The garden is dog friendly (there is a barrier which goes across the Lodge entrance to prevent your dog from escaping) and a perfect sun trap. The welcome basket and food provided was absolutely a lovely, tasteful touch. Sarah as an owner, lives on an adjacent property and communication with her was spot on. Having spoken to Sarah on a couple of occasions, she is a lovely person, enjoys catering for guests in the Lodge and really does make people feel welcome. Her suggestion of a nearby beach for our dog was impeccable, so much nicer than Whitby, both for our dog and ourselves. A nicer host you could not find! The best compliment I can give is that we will be coming back here in the near future, to explore Yorkshire a bit more and to enjoy the Lodge again. Would I recommend Garthgate Lodge to others? I would but don't want to as it is a gem I'd rather keep to myself.

We stayed at Garthgate Holiday Lodge for 4 nights between 17th July and 21st July 2023.

When we arrived, the lodge was very well presented and was lovely and clean. What you see in the photo’s is exactly how it is, beautifully decorated throughout. The kitchen is well stocked with all the amenities you can think of, plus more! The bed is amazingly comfortable, giving us 4 nights of great sleep. The bathroom is luxurious including large walk-in raindrop shower. The hot tub was immaculately clean and under cover via a gazebo. We found the temperature to be perfect. Sarah is a very welcoming host and was happy to answer any questions we had. There were so many little touches that made the world of difference, including simple written instructions for appliances placed around the lodge. The jar of hygiene amenities in the bathroom in case you forget anything. Torches in the bedside drawers in case of a power cut during the night (Not that we had a power cut during our stay). Even the high spec free Wi-Fi and Netflix subscription! They really had thought of everything from a guesses perspective and got it covered. We have stayed at similar lodges before and found Garthgate to be superior to them all. We would have no hesitation recommending Garthgate Lodge and will be looking to make a return visit soon. Sorry but we felt rather disappointed in this cottage.

For the money I expected a few luxuries, like tables beside the bed to put a cup on, not a dressing table with no access under the roof beams. It would have been nice to have a mirror with a shelf for makeup that was lit enough to see and/or a dressing table. The sofa was so slippery it was barely possible to sit on. The kitchen had the basics but I felt, as in other reviews sadly, that I had to wash things before use. The cupboard cupboard for food had sticky shelves which I covered in paper towel and the frying pans had to be washed before use to get rid of the grease still on them. One of the lamps didn’t work and had a broken plug. Thankfully the bed was comfortable and the shower worked well. The bathroom was very clean. Generally though, I’m afraid, it was not à comfortable experience and we did not wish to linger longer. I was shocked to find that the cottage that I had paid a lot of money for, for 3 nights, was definitely not the end to our holiday that I was looking forward to. I paid almost half of this to two other companies and they were well appointed and pristine- a hotel and a private accommodation.

      Wow, what a find!

We had such a lovely stay, with everything you would ever need for a relaxing getaway. The attention to detail really makes this place special, including the lovely welcome pack with local produce and doggy treats. The hot tub was perfect and really made our stay. The cottage is within walking distance (about 20 minutes) to two local villages, we recommend the fish and chip shop in Rillington and the Ham and Cheese Pub (dog friendly) in Scagglethorpe - the food at the pub was amazing and had a homely atmosphere. An amazing few days in the cottage, including a trip to nearby Malton. 10/10, we will be back!!! Thank you so much for having us and the warm welcome.
